Sports medicine from your family practice

Joint pain and injuries can sideline you from the things you enjoy, whether that is a high school season, a weekend run or simply getting through the workday without a sore knee. At Beckett Ridge Family Medicine, you can get care for these problems from providers who know sports medicine and also know you and your family.

Dr. Chris Diatte is board certified in both Family Practice and Sports Medicine. He completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship with St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and has volunteered with high school athletic teams. Our nurse practitioners, Kim Butts and Taylor Boontjer, also see patients with injuries and joint pain.

We care for student athletes, weekend warriors and older adults from West Chester Township, Liberty Township, Mason and Fairfield.

Problems we commonly see

  • Sprains and strains, such as a rolled ankle, a twisted knee or a pulled muscle.
  • Overuse injuries from repeating the same motion, such as tendon pain, shin pain or a sore elbow or shoulder.
  • Knee pain from injuries, overuse or wear and tear.
  • Shoulder pain from lifting, throwing or reaching.
  • Back and neck pain from strain, posture or activity.
  • Arthritis and joint stiffness that make daily life harder.

How we evaluate your pain

We start by listening. We ask how the pain started, what makes it better or worse and what you need to get back to. Then your provider examines the joint or area, checking movement, strength, stability and where it hurts. If your injury needs a closer look, we arrange imaging at an outside facility and go over the results with you.

Your treatment plan

Most joint and muscle problems get better with the right plan and some patience. Depending on your injury, your plan may include:

  • Rest and activity changes. Rest doesn't always mean stopping everything. Often it means changing how you move so the injury can heal while you stay active.
  • Home exercises. Simple stretching and strengthening exercises can help you recover and lower the chance of the same injury happening again.
  • Medicine when appropriate. Over-the-counter or prescription medicine may help with pain and swelling. We'll talk about what is safe for you, especially if you have other health conditions.
  • Referral to physical therapy when guided rehab will help you recover.
  • Referral to orthopedics if your injury may need a specialist's care or surgery. We stay involved and help you understand your options.

Return to play for student athletes

Getting back into the game too soon can turn a small injury into a bigger one. We work with student athletes and their parents on a step-by-step return to practice and competition, based on how the injury is healing, not just on the calendar. For a suspected concussion, an athlete should return to sports only with a health care provider's approval and supervision. The CDC's HEADS UP guide to returning to sports explains the gradual steps.

Living well with arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain, especially as we get older. While it is a long-term condition, there is a lot you can do to stay active and comfortable. We help you manage pain, keep moving, build strength around the joint and reach a healthy weight if that would ease the load on your knees and hips. If you'd like support with weight, our medical weight loss program may help.

Go to the ER or call 911 if a bone looks out of place or is poking through the skin, a limb is cold, pale or numb, or you can't move or put any weight on it after a serious injury.

For a new injury during office hours, we may be able to see you the same day. Call (513) 860-4600.

Step by step

What to expect at your visit

  1. Tell us what happened

We ask how and when the pain started, what activities you do and what you want to get back to.

  2. A hands-on exam

Your provider checks the area for swelling, tenderness, range of motion, strength and stability.

  3. Imaging if needed

If your injury needs a closer look, we arrange imaging at an outside facility and review the results with you.

  4. A plan to get you moving

You leave with clear steps for activity, home exercises and pain relief, plus a timeline for follow-up and any referrals.

Frequently asked questions

Many injuries and joint problems don't need surgery, and a sports medicine physician can treat them. Dr. Diatte is board certified in Sports Medicine. If we think you may need surgery or a specialist, we'll refer you to orthopedics.

No. Sports medicine is for anyone with joint, muscle or activity-related pain. We see students, adults who exercise, people with physical jobs and older adults with arthritis.

It depends on the injury and how long ago it happened. Your provider will give you advice that fits your injury. If you aren't sure what to do at home, call us.

Yes. We work with student athletes and parents on a gradual return to practice and games based on how the injury is healing. For concussions, return to sports should happen only with a provider's approval and supervision.

You may be able to. Call during office hours and we'll offer a same-day visit if one is available, or tell you if you should go to the ER instead. Learn about same-day sick visits.
